There are lots of opportunities in Portugal for scuba diving and Lisbon and central Portugal have accessible, interesting sites for divers of all levels. Diving trips in the area often start with a boat ride from Fonte de Telha, Peniche, Sesimbra, Serra da Arrábida or Setubal.

The region offers a good variety of scuba diving experiences including reef diving, wrecks, deep sea diving and great photo opportunites. Some of the top sites in this region are: Arcanzil, Pedra da Lagoa, Maria Eduarda, Pedra da Caldeira, Baleeira, Cabo Espichal and its resident wreck the Nigerian cargo ship River Gurara , the marine park at the Berlengas Islands near Peniche and around Fonte de Telha.

While diving near Lisbon you may come across some of these sea creatures: gray seals, harbor seals, leatherback sea turtles, bottle nose dolphins, humpback whales, beluga whales, great white sharks, basking sharks, sixgill sharks, blue fin tuna, common eagle rays, manta rays, cuttle fish, tarpons, lobster, conger eels, John Dory, octopus, pollocks, huge bream and squid. So keep your eyes peeled!

If after all that diving you still can't get enough of sea life or want to encourage your kids, visit Lisbon's spectacular, state of the art, Vasco de Gama Oceanarium. The gorgeous otters are particular favourites of ours!
