The Alentejo is a fascinating region to explore by bike with varied and beautiful countryside, many fascinating historic towns and villages and a wild, unspoilt coastline.

On all the Alentejo cycling tours we're confident you'll enjoy discovering diverse landscapes, learning about the history and culture of this little-known region, staying in friendly local guesthouses and hotels and indulging in the excellent local wine and food.

We offer guided and self guided Alentejo cycling tours. On guided tours you'll be travelling in small groups of like-minded people led by an experienced and knowledgeable guide. The guided tours are designed to be easy, enjoyable cycling so you don't have to be superfit to join in and have a good time. On the self guided Alentejo cycling tours we expect you to be an independent rider. You will receive from us the necessary tools to change a flat tyre etc and all the route instructions you need to follow the itinerary by yourself. You'll also receive notes on the history of the area and suggestions of good places to eat. With our expert recommendations you'll be able to have a rewarding and unforgettable holiday and we will always be available through our cell phones, to help you with anything.

Alentejo Cycling Tour 1: Cycling in Paradise

This Alentejo cycling tour is available as a guided or self guided tour and you can choose between a 3, 4 or 7 night holiday. The tour will take you through a beautiful rolling landscape of vineyards, olive groves, cork and Holm oak forests and grazing land and to the historic towns and villages that are the gems of the Alentejo and there's plenty of chances to sample the local wines and delicacies.

This is a single base tour staying in a comfortable, welcoming guest house in a genuine Monte (traditional Alentejan farm) where you just relax or wander through the flower and bird filled pathways, orchard, sheep pastures, ancient olive and cork groves and organic vegetable garden.

Depending on the length of your holiday your rides could include all or some of the following routes.
Route 1 includes the UNESCO World Heritage city of Evora its mediaeval cathedral and macabre chapel of bones, the Dolmen of Zambugeiro (the biggest in Europe) and the Cromelech of Almendres, probably the oldest megalithic monument in Europe with beautiful views over Evora, the Menhir of Almendres, the Church of Mitra and the Roman Ruins of Nossa Sra da Tourega.
Cycling route 2 visits the picturesque villages of Graca do Divor and Arraiolos famous for its beautiful historical centre, traditional carpets and yummy Pasteis de Toucinho cakes and enjoys fantastic views from the castle and along past the Divor dam and lake.
The 3rd route on this Alentejo cycling tour includes a visit to a traditional leather factory and during the winter season an olive oil mill and the surreal castle of Valengo and winds along beautiful country and riverside lanes past the picturesque Moinho do Alcaide water mill and a vineyard.
Route 4 takes in the medieval, hilltop village and castle of Monsaraz, a must see for visitors to this area, wonderful views over the Alqueva lake, the largest artificial lake in Europe, several megalithic monuments and the famous pottery village of S. Pedro do Corval.
Finally route 5 of this Alentejo cycling holiday visits the historical centre of Estremoz famous for its white marble quarries and the impressive 16th century palace of Vila Vicosa, Alandroal, the fortified sanctuary of Terena and the famous cheese and wine producing town of Redondo. This tour is avaiable all year round with a minimum of 2 people- we recommend avoiding july and August as it is very hot then!

Alentejo Cycling Tour 2: Along the Coast

This Alentejo cycling tour promises easy and relaxing cycling days with lots of time to stop to explore, take a swim in the sea or enjoy a cold beer and a picnic on some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. The tour takes you through four different nature reserves, dramatic unspoilt landscapes and tiny blue and white fishing villages, over towering sea cliffs with fantastic views, to lagoons, cork oak and pine forests, rice fields and sleeping country towns. Everyday is different and new and everyday is special.

This tour is available as a guided or self guided 7 night holiday staying in different villages every night, starting in Sesimbra and finishing in Odeceixe, a small village on the border with Algarve. You'll cycle between 29 and 43km per day on mostly flat or gently rolling roads and a few dirt tracks.

Day 1 of the coastal Alentejo cycling tour is arrival day and a chance to explore locally.
Day 2 the first cycling day takes you from Sesimbra to Setubal. It's a gorgeous mountain route through the Natural Park of Arrabida taking in the castle of Sesimbra, fantastic views over the mountains and the shimmering ocean below. Climb to conquer the views and then enjoy a long and fast descent to the beach for lunch and a refreshing swim before cycling through incredible coastal scenery.
On day 3 you'll cycle from Setubal to Pinheiro da Cruz including a beautiful boat crossing to Troia where you might even spot the wild dolphins. The route takes you through the sand dunes of the Troia peninsula, the rice fields where many storks and egrets feed and endless golden, sandy beaches. There is the chance to stop for a wine tasting and the tour finishes by a fresh water lagoon, a great excuse for a cooling swim after your ride!
On day 4 you cycle along the coast from the Santo Andre Lagoon, a haven for birdlife, to Santiago do Cacem, passing the lovely village and lagoon of Melides.
On day 5 this Alentejo cycling tour takes you to the picturesque fishing village of Porto Covo. En route you can visit the Santiago windmill of Santiago and the roman ruins of Mirobriga before cycling through a beautiful oak forest to a coastline of dramatic black schist cliffs. This day includes a free afternoon to relax at the beach or explore the coast on foot or by bike.
On the 6th day you'll cycle from Porto Covo to Almograve, passing the fort of the Pessegueiro Island, through fishing villages and along the coast to Vila Nova de Mil Fontes for lunch at the beach before finishing the day on a spectacular coastal route.
The final cycling day you'll follow an incredibly beautiful track with wild and rocky coastal scenery, be sure to keep an eye out for the storks who nest on tall rocks out in the ocean itself! Upon arrival at Odeceixe you can relax in the village or take a riverside ride to the beach. Guided tour start dates for 2015: 2nd May, 13th June, 4th July, 12th September. Other dates may be available subject to demand.

Alentejo Cycling Tour 3: Castles and Wine

The Alentejo cycling tour for anyone interested in this beautiful region's history, culture and vineyards! Highlights of this 7 night Alentejo cycling tour include sleeping in castles, palaces and farmhouses, exploring spectacular, diverse landscapes of vineyards, olive groves and cork oaks, visiting beautiful, mediaeval towns and villages and of course sampling the excellent local food and wine. This tour is available as a guided or self guided 7 night holiday covering between 35 and 50km a day mostly on gently, undulating roads.

The tour starts from the small village of Alvito that is famous for its manueline architecture.
Day 1 is arrival day.
On day 2 you'll cycle through sleepy hamlets to Viana do Alentejo a village famous for its pottery, majestic castle and churches and then onto the UNESCO world heritage city of Evora.
On day 3 the tour passes through a lovely landscape of holm oak and cork trees visiting some of the most important megalithic monuments of the region and exploring Evora itself including a visit to the grizzly chapel of bones and the cathedral before finishing with a wine tasting.
On day 4 you leave Evora and head through olive groves to the little village of Nossa Sra de Machede where we'll stop to visit the leather factory and an olive mill (when in season). Before carrying on to the castle of Valongo, the cheesemakers of Aldeias de Montoito and Reguengos de Monsaraz.
Day 5 starts with a visit to the famous pottery village of S. Pedro do Corval, followed by lunch by the lake and a wine tasting at the famous Esporao vineyard. Then on to the gorgeous hilltop village of Monsaraz with its mediaeval streets and castle and beautiful views over Alqueva the largest manmade lake in Europe.
On day 6 you'll visit the sanctuary of Nossa Sra da Boa Nova before entering the moonlike landscape of the "white gold" marble quarries of Bencatel area and onto Vila Vicosa a favourite holiday spot for many kings and aristocrats in centuries past as evidenced in the many beautiful manor houses.
The final cycling day kicks off with a visit to the fabulous Ducal Palace of Vila Vicosa, and then you'll cycle to Borba and Gloria and the Church of Nossa Sra dos Martires, a marble gothic church. At the end of this Alentejo cycling tour you'll arrive in Estremoz where we're sure you'll be impressed by the beautiful architecture and the imposing tower of the castle where you will sleep! Guided tour start dates for 2015: 16th May, 24th October. Other dates may be available subject to demand.
