Golf in Portimao, Lagos and the Western Algarve ![]() As well as great golf Portimao and the Western Algarve have some of the most stunning beaches in the Algarve and beautiful unspoilt countryside further inland. The area is generally less developed than the central Algarve and you can either enjoy the tranquility of the countryside or head for the livelier seaside towns. The golf courses have been created by leading designers and many have impressive views over the coast and the wooded hills of Monchique. If you want to play golf in Portimao and the western Algarve expect to pay in the region of €40 to €100 for greens fees.
Where to play golf in Portimao and the Western Algarve
![]() Parque da Floresta Golf Boavista Golf ClubA Howard Swan designed course with spectacular views over the bay of Lagos and the hills of Monchique. It makes the most of the lovely natural surroundings and also has a teaching academy. The maximum handicap for men is 27 and for ladies 34. Palmares Golf This peaceful course was designed by Frank Pennick and is another with beautiful beach and mountain views. As you can see from the photo at the top of the page. In fact the first hole is said to be one of the most spectacular in the Algarve. It is home to the Amendoeiras em Flor Championship, the oldest international tournament in Algarve. The course is near Odiáxere, a little to the north-east of Lagos.
Penina GolfThis course is acknowledged as Sir Henry Cotton's masterpiece and since its opening in 1966 it has regularly hosted the Portuguese Open. It is located slightly to the west of Portimão. The maximum handicap for men is 28 and for ladies 36. ![]() Alto Golf Country Club Also designed by Sir Henry Cotton, this course was built in tranquil rolling countryside and boasts the longest hole in Portugal (604 metres). It is between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, and is the nearest golf to Portimão. Morgado do Reguengo Golf Course and the Álamos Golf courseThese two championship golf courses together form one of the largest golfing complexes in the West Algarve. They are set in rolling countryside below Monchique and to the north of Portimão with lovely views over the hills, vineyards and a dam. The maximum handicap for men is 28 and for ladies 36.
