So it's time to shake off the winter blues and start practising your samba! Portuguese carnivals are usually a mix of samba dancers (sometimes semi-naked Brazilian girls), fancy dress, non stop partying and, often satirical, floats. The kids get a day off school and everything stops as towns celebrate. So if you're in Portugal don't miss out on all the fun. There are carnivals in many towns across the country. Among the best are: Torres Vedras, Loule, Batalha, Nazare, Ovar, Figueira da Foz, Estarreja, Podence and Funchal (Madeira) Have fun... p.s. not sure where these towns are follow the link below to a map of Portugal Permalink -- click for full blog postLisbon named top destination for 2008The New York Times has released its list of the 53 places to go in 2008 and Portugal's capital Lisbon is in at number two. New Marinas for PortugalPortugal has great conditions for sailing and this together with the quality of life and year round sunshine has drawn an ever growing number of sailors to its marinas. So much so that many are now full at peak times of the year. In order to create more berths Vilamoura has dramatic plans to extend its marina and incorporate luxury houses, artificial lakes and stunning landscaping. A new marina is due to open in Troia near Lisbon in February and another in Ferragudo in the Algarve in 2010. All this is great news not only for boat owners but also for people who just want to try their hand at sailing or enjoy a scenic boat trip. Find out more about sailing in Portugal or go sailing in Lisbon Christmas and New Year in PortugalAnother Christmas is almost here and families across Portugal are stocking up with turkey and bacalhau (dried cod), bolo de rei cake and sugary sonhos de natal ready for the feast. If you're looking for a white Christmas in Portugal there's only one place to go- the Serra da Estrela mountains in central Portugal the sunny country's most popular winter sports destination. If you can't make it that far some cities like Faro in the Algarve are working hard on creating that Christmas atmosphere. Not only do they have temporary ice rinks in shopping centres but they've even hired artificial snow machines to fill the high street with clouds of foamy flakes! New Year sees big street parties all across Portugal with live music, dancing and fireworks. The biggest party though has to be on the island of Madeira which hosts what is officially the world's largest New Year's firework display- well worth the trip. Portugal Sport and Adventure wishes you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Play with the England Under 20sThe English national under 20s rugby union team will be in the Algarve for a training camp from 9th to 14th December. The team will be warming up for their 2008 season at Browns Sports and Leisure club in Vilamoura a favourite with professional sports teams from across the world. At an open day on the 13th young rugby players are invited to come and play with the team. So if you're between 16 and 18 and would like tips and feedback from the national coaches and player don't mis this opportunity. The islands were judged on their environmental and cultural interest and integrity. Here are some of the judge's comments on the Azores: "The islands' green volcanic mountains and picturesque black and white towns look set to remain unspoiled." "Remote and temperate, the Azores remain lightly touristed. Main visitor type is the independent traveler staying in B&Bs. The ecosystem from the beautiful hydrangea-covered hills of Flores to the rock-bottomed bays of Terceira is in great shape. Whales still a frequent sight. Local culture strong and vibrant. Not uncommon to be invited to a person's house for dinner, or welcomed into a communal meal during a festival." There's lots to do on the Azores including fishing, walking, swimming with dolphins, climbing, cycling, boat trips and more. We also offer Azores packages with accommodation car hire and fun days out.
