Blokarting
More and more people are getting hooked on blokarting. The concept is quite simple. A blokart is a three wheeled kart attached to a big sail. When the wind blows you're off shooting around the track at up to 90 km per hour (55mph). The karts are handsteered, easy to learn and safe so all ages are welcome. After only a few minutes instruction and a couple of practice laps you'll be ready to race. Just make sure its windy before you leave home!

Aerial Slides (aka zipwires)
A head for heights and nerves of steel could come in handy for this one; as you fly through the air dangling from a cable far above the ground. There are aerial slides in some spectacular locations in Portugal stretching their way down mountains and through woodland. The longest is currently the 300 metre (nearly 1000 feet) Slide do Caramulinho that offers breath taking views and a very fast descent through the Serra de Caramulo mountains in Beja, Northern Portugal. Slightly bizarrely, some people have found that this sport has actually helped them overcome a fear of heights!

Paintballing
Feeling competitive? Challenge your friends or family to a shoot out in the Portuguese countryside! Paintballing is a very strategic game so get planning if you want to cover yourself in glory. Failing that it's a great way to have a laugh, burn off some energy and work up an appetite.
Climbing, Abseiling (rappelling) and Caving.
If you're looking for a new mental and physical challenge then a day's climbing or abseiling could be for you. Portugal's jagged coastline, craggy mountains and volcanic islands mean that you are never far from a climbing opportunity. There are lots of beginner's courses available for adults and older kids and with expert instruction you can be up and away in no time. There are artificial climbing and abseiling walls that will also be suitable for younger kids. Serious climbers tend to head to the more mountainous regions of North and Central Portugal or to the peaks of Madeira and the Azores. In our reviews section you can read an account of one man's climb up Portugal's highest mountain, Pico in the Azores. If you're into caving you're in luck with over 2000 caves to explore on mainland Portugal, particularly in the central region, and more along the coastline.
